WHY DO MEN AND BOYS USE VIOLENCE? EXAMPLES, CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS FROM TURKEY

Violent behaviours of Turkish men and boys will be reviewed and discussed in terms of gender equality, parenting, and religious & traditional beliefs of men. Moreover there will be a discussion that will allow discussing different experiences, challenges and solutions with participants. Presentation will have three main topics: Father Support program (FSP), awareness seminars on violence and gender equality and examples from individual psychotherapy sessions related with gender equality and domestic violence.
1. FSP: The specific objectives of the program are to foster democratic behaviour in the family, to establish healthy communication between fathers and children, and to change behaviour that may include physical and emotional punishment, gender inequality. Program method includes structured two hours 10 or 13 conversations. In 2010 ACEV decided to enrich its’ programs with the themes of peace and respect for diversity, human dignity, preventing domestic violence and providing gender equality and child protection.
2. Awareness seminars: After 2011 revision AÇEV created 3 days awareness seminars especially for public social workers, teachers, and psychologists and administers. We have experienced that information and perceptions of participants on gender equality and domestic violence is very relative and varies in huge range.
3. Individual psychotherapy sessions: Author will share his individual psychotherapy sessions, which is related gender equality and domestic violence.
Additionally, the question of “how and why men learn and use domestic violence and also gender inequality” will be tried to answer.
